We are HERE in the NORTH EAST.

Our dynamic network of cultural organisations, societies and associations have brought together, with so many creative activities over the decades, the many people of the North East who identify as Black, or racialised, or minoritised – members of the global majority.

We celebrate here those individuals and groups, and invite you to join our exploration of the many histories, events and actions of our people in the North East. This is just a beginning: we hope HERE North East will be a ‘living’ archive and resource centre that excites and inspires today’s social justice.

About

HERE North East brings together a range of Black-led organisations and individuals to capture not only the history and practice of antiracism work in the North East, but also to serve as a physical and virtual cultural hub, wellbeing and development centre for communities and organisations that identify as Black or from the Global majority.

Our region is often regarded as devoid of multicultural diversity, HERE NE provides a space to contradict this narrative and to show that our communities have always been here and have been active in shaping the cultural landscape of the North East.

HERE North East began in 2020 as a partnership led by Sangini, ¡VAMOS!, and Northumbria University, in collaboration with the Pakistan Cultural Society, the Newcastle Chinese Healthy Living Centre, The Angelou Centre, NEEACA (North East of England African Community Association), The Heritage Resilience Network and many other individuals in the North East of England.

Since then we have grown into a wider collaboration with ambitions to be a leading cultural centre for Black and global majority communities in the NE.
